At a glance, a natural diamond and a lab-grown diamond can look identical, both are made of pure carbon, both sparkle under the same light. What Is a Natural Diamond?
Natural diamonds are formed deep within the earth over one to three billion years, under immense heat and pressure, before being carried to the surface by volcanic activity. Each one is a genuine piece of the earth's history, finite and unrepeatable. No two natural diamonds are ever quite the same.
What Is a Lab-Grown Diamond?
Lab-grown diamonds are chemically and optically identical to natural diamonds, but they're created in a laboratory in a matter of weeks, using high pressure and heat or a chemical vapour process to replicate the natural growing conditions. Because they can be produced on demand and at scale, lab-grown diamonds aren't rare, and their supply is effectively unlimited.
Rarity and Value
Rarity is a large part of what makes a diamond valuable, and it's where natural and lab-grown diamonds diverge most. A natural diamond is a finite resource, one that took billions of years to form and can never be replicated. Lab-grown diamonds, by contrast, can be manufactured indefinitely, and as production has scaled up in recent years, their resale value has fallen significantly and continues to trend downward. A natural diamond is more likely to hold its value and become a genuine heirloom, passed down rather than replaced.
