Natural vs Cultured Pearls

Today, more than 99% of all genuine pearls sold worldwide are cultured pearls. While the term cultured is sometimes misunderstood, it simply refers to pearls that have been grown by a living oyster with the careful assistance of skilled pearl farmers.

Like natural pearls, cultured pearls are formed from layers of nacre produced by the oyster itself. The only difference is how the process begins. In a natural pearl, an irritant enters the oyster by chance. In a cultured pearl, the process is carefully initiated by a pearl technician, after which nature takes over entirely.

Cultured pearls are not imitation pearls. They are genuine gemstones created by living oysters over several years, developing the same natural beauty, lustre and composition as natural pearls.

Natural pearls, formed without any human intervention, are extraordinarily rare and are now primarily found in museums, historic collections and auctions. Their scarcity means they are seldom seen in modern jewellery.

Imitation or "fake" pearls, on the other hand, are manufactured from materials such as glass or plastic with a pearlescent coating. They contain no nacre and possess none of the rarity, durability or intrinsic value of genuine pearls.
