What is Gold Vermeil? Our Complete Guide

If you've ventured into the world of jewellery, you've likely encountered the term 'Gold Vermeil'. This guide will help you understand what 18k Gold Vermeil is and how to care for your jewellery.

What is Gold Vermeil?

Gold Vermeil is a technique which is a combination of Sterling Silver electro-plated with Solid Gold, and is popular due to its long-lasting wear. All AUTORE MODA Gold Vermeil pieces are electroplated with 18 carat gold, with a thickness of 3 microns.

Gold Vermeil vs Gold Plated

18k Gold Vermeil is different to standard Gold Plated jewellery due to the thickness of Gold, and the metal used to form the base of the piece. standard Gold Plated jewellery has a plating of at least 0.5 microns in thickness and usually uses inexpensive materials to form the structure of the piece of jewellery, such as base metal or brass, and is commonly found in fashion jewellery. Gold Vermeil is more commonly used in demi fine jewellery as is a premium technique that requires the piece to be crafted in Sterling Silver, plated with solid Gold at least 2.5 microns in thickness.

Is Gold Vermeil good quality?

18k Gold Vermeil jewellery is much higher in quality, longevity and value than standard gold-plating, and is a great alternative if you do not wish to buy Solid Gold jewellery. It is becoming increasingly popular as it is the perfect balance of quality and value

Does Gold Vermeil tarnish?

Tarnishing can occur when your jewellery comes into contact with oils, sweat, acidic materials or harsh chemicals and there is a reaction which causes corrosion of the plating.18k Gold Vermeil can tarnish over time, however, with the correct care, your piece can last for many years. How to take care of your Gold Vermeil jewellery

To take the best care of your AUTORE MODA  jewellery, we recommend removing it prior to any activities which will result in it getting wet including swimming, showering or exercising. It is also best to gently wipe down your jewellery with a damp cloth from time to time to prevent damage from perspiration, oils, toxins or dirt.
