Ring Sizing Guide: How to Find Your Perfect Fit
A ring that's the wrong size is one of the most common, and most fixable, jewellery frustrations. Too tight and it won't go past your knuckle; too loose and it spins around or catches on everything. The good news: finding your correct size takes about five minutes at home.
Three Ways to Measure Your Ring Size
1. The String or Paper Strip Method
This is the easiest no-equipment option.
- Cut a thin strip of paper or a piece of string about 10cm long
- Wrap it snugly around the base of the finger you're sizing, not too tight, not loose enough to slide off
- Mark where the end meets the wrap with a pen
- Lay the strip flat and measure the length in millimetres against a ruler
- That measurement is your finger's circumference, match it against the sizing chart below
2. The Existing Ring Method
If you already own a ring that fits the intended finger well:
- Place the ring on a ruler or measure its internal diameter in millimetres, from one inner edge to the other, straight across the centre
- Match that diameter to the chart below
This method is more reliable than the string method if you have a well-fitting ring to reference, since it removes the guesswork of "snug but not tight."

If your measurement falls between two sizes, size up — a slightly loose ring is more comfortable and less risky than one that's too tight.
Things That Affect Ring Size (Even for the Same Finger)
- Temperature. Fingers swell in heat and shrink in cold, avoid sizing right after a hot shower, exercise, or on a very cold day.
- Time of day. Fingers are typically slightly smaller in the morning and larger by evening.
- Dominant hand. Your dominant hand's fingers are often very slightly larger.
- Band width. Wider bands (like statement or eternity rings) generally need to size up slightly compared to a thin band, since more surface area sits against the knuckle.
- Knuckle vs. base. If your knuckle is noticeably larger than the base of your finger, size for comfortable passage over the knuckle first, a jeweller can help balance fit if there's a big difference.
Buying a Ring as a Surprise (Without Asking)
If you're buying an engagement ring or gift and can't ask for a size directly:
- Borrow a ring they already wear on the correct finger (or the equivalent finger on the opposite hand) and use the diameter method above
- Note which finger and hand it came from, sizes can differ slightly between hands
- When in doubt, most rings can be resized after purchase, so it's rarely a dealbreaker, check the resizing before you buy
